The acquisition, which Dell Technologies has yet to officially announce but did confirm, brings the company a leading developer of cloud automation and orchestration capabilities for DevOps and ITSM environments.
Dell Technologies has quietly acquired Cloudify as a way to provide better cloud orchestration capabilities.
According to TechCrunch, which Wednesday broke the news, Dell acquired Cloudify for about $100 million.
Dell Tuesday filed a Form S-8 with the SEC titled Cloudify Platform Ltd. 2017 Share Incentive Plan in which Dell refers to issuing of Class C common stock “in respect of certain outstanding and unvested options to acquire the ordinary shares of Cloudify Platform Ltd., an Israeli private liability company.”
However, a Dell spokesperson confirmed the acquisition via email, writing, “Dell Technologies announced that it has completed the acquisition of Cloudify. This transaction allows Dell to continue to innovate our edge offerings.”
Herzliya, Israel-based Cloudify, which has its U.S. headquarters in New York, was founded as an open-source DevOps automation platform delivering what it calls ‘Environment as a Service’ technology.
Cloudify’s environment-as-a-service packages infrastructure, networking, and automation tools into certified blueprints that it says its customers can use to manage heterogeneous cloud environments at scale, and to help bridge the gap between DevOps and IT service management (ITSM).
The technology lets DevOps teams working in hybrid cloud and cloud-native environments to automate provisioning and update workflows.
Cloudify includes in its technology ecosystem such partners as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, F5, Wind River Software, and ServiceNow.
Dell, for years a pillar in the on-premises data center and end user markets, has in the last couple years articulated its cloud strategy.
The company in January of 2022 launched new Apex as-a-service offerings and public cloud integrations with the goal of moving customers from multi-cloud ‘by default’ to multi-cloud ‘by design’ by integrating more deeply with public cloud leaders, offering stand-alone software for public clouds, and growing its Apex portfolio and global footprint.
Dell followed up four months later with the introduction of new multi-cloud security offerings targeting AWS and Microsoft Azure environments.
Prior to its acquisition of Cloudify, Dell in 2013 acquired Enstratius, a provider of cloud management services.
