The Battlefield franchise returned to its former glory with the release of Battlefield 6 earlier this month. The multiplayer military shooter is about to launch its first season of content and events, which will bring changes to the game as well as a new free-to-play battle royale mode.
Update 1.1.1.0 for Battlefield 6 rolled out Tuesday morning, and with it came Redsec, a free-to-play content pack. A trailer released on Tuesday showcased the new battle royale mode that will have players join a squad to survive the 100-person battle.
Redsec battle royale matches will take place on Fort Lyndon, a government testing ground. Players will pick their class and join a four-person squad or grab a partner as a duo. All across the map are vehicles such as helicopters, tanks and even golf carts, as well as loot to help players survive as they maneuver across the map to avoid the Circle of Death closing in around them. In matches, players will gain XP from eliminating other contenders and completing missions given to them during the match. As they level up, they can gain new traits and better equipment for their class.
Redsec is not just about battle royale matches. There is a squad-focused Gauntlet match that has eight teams competing in a series of missions or modes in a series of rounds. After each round, the two squads ranked last will be eliminated until one team prevails.
For those players who want a bit of variety with this new map, Redsec also has a version of Portal, which is the game’s creative sandbox, allowing players to make their own battle royale or Gauntlet matches.
Redsec is free-to-play and does not require a copy of Battlefield 6, although in the case of Portal, there will be limited assets available to create with if the main game is not purchased.
Along with Redsec comes the first update to kick off season 1. It contains a slew of improvements, which include refined animations, better accuracy on weapons, visual upgrades and map fixes to resolve issues that arise while playing a match. A longer list of what’s being changed with this first season was posted on the game’s official X account.
Redsec marks the franchise’s second attempt at a battle royale mode. Battlefield V had theFirestorm modethat launched in March 2019,five months after the game launched. It tried to capture the battle royale craze at the time, but it was largely forgotten by players, especially with the release ofCall of Duty: Warzonethe following year.
Battlefield 6 is out now for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles.
